Sagre: The Best Events You've Never Heard Of
All summer and autumn, villages across the province throw sagre — food festivals run by volunteers, usually dedicated to one dish: gnocchi, sopressa, snails, mushrooms, polenta, duck, the works. Long communal tables, plastic cups of local wine, a dance floor with a live liscio band, and dinner for €15. They are unpretentious, family-friendly, and the fastest way to eat brilliantly and meet actual locals.
Look for banners strung across village roads announcing the next
sagra, or search "sagre vicentine" plus the month. Bring cash; card machines are
rare at the ticket window.
Big Events Within Day-Trip Range
- Verona Arena Opera Festival (June–September) — open-air opera in a Roman amphitheater; even opera skeptics convert. Book early, bring a cushion.
- Venice Carnevale (Jan/Feb) and the Venice Film Festival (early September) — both an easy train ride.
- Vinitaly in Verona (April) — the world's biggest wine fair; trade-focused but the city buzzes.
- Palio and historical pageants — Montagnana, Este, and other walled towns nearby stage medieval festivals through the summer.
